1. Preparation:

  • Inspect the Piping System: Ensure that the entire PE piping system is installed correctly, and all connections are properly fused or joined.

  • Remove Debris: Clean the inside of the pipes and fittings to remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the testing process.

  • Seal Openings: Seal all openings in the system, including valves and fittings, to ensure that the pressure is maintained during the test.

2. Equipment and Material:

  • Hydrostatic Pump: Use a hydrostatic pump capable of achieving the required test pressure.

  • Pressure Gauge: Install a calibrated pressure gauge to monitor the test pressure accurately.

  • Water Source: Use clean water as the testing medium.

3. Pressure Testing Procedure:

  • Fill the System: Gradually fill the PE piping system with water until it is completely full. Ensure that air is vented from the system.

  • Pressure Stabilization: Allow the pressure to stabilize within the system. This ensures that the system is uniformly pressurized.

  • Apply Test Pressure: Increase the pressure gradually to the specified test pressure. Common test pressures for PE piping systems range from 1.5 to 2 times the design pressure.

  • Hold Period: Maintain the test pressure for a specified hold period. This duration allows for the identification of potential leaks.

  • Pressure Monitoring: Continuously monitor the pressure using the pressure gauge during the hold period. If the pressure drops, it may indicate a leak.

4. Leak Identification:

  • Visual Inspection: Inspect the entire piping system for visible leaks, such as water droplets or wet spots.

  • Use Leak Detection Solution: Apply a suitable leak detection solution to joints and connections. Bubbles will form if there is a leak.

  • Acoustic Monitoring: Use acoustic listening devices to identify any unusual sounds that may indicate a leak.

5. Documentation:

  • Record Results: Document the test pressure, hold period, and any observations during the testing process.

  • Certification: If the system passes the test, issue a certification stating that the PE piping system has been successfully leak-tested and is ready for service.

6. Safety Measures:

  • Safety Precautions: Adhere to safety guidelines during the testing process to ensure the well-being of personnel and equipment.

  • Proper Venting: Vent the system properly to avoid over-pressurization.

7. Post-Test Procedures:

  • Drain the System: After successful testing, drain the system to prepare it for normal operation.

  • Address Identified Leaks: If leaks are detected, address and repair them promptly. Re-test the system after repairs.

Conducting a thorough and well-documented field leak test using hydrostatic pressure is crucial for the long-term performance and reliability of polyethylene pressure piping systems. Always follow industry standards, manufacturer recommendations, and local regulations when conducting pressure tests.
